Santa Cruz - The Galápagos Island That Has It All

Hello Reader,

Barking sea lions. Giant tortoises. Marine iguanas sprawled across volcanic rocks like tiny prehistoric dragons. Crystal-clear swimming spots tucked between black lava cliffs.

Welcome to Santa Cruz Island!

If the Galápagos Islands have been living rent-free on your travel bucket list for years (same), Santa Cruz is where many travelers begin their adventure and after spending time here, it's easy to see why.

It's the perfect introduction to one of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

One of the things that surprised us most about Santa Cruz is how wonderfully varied it is.

The island's lively main town, Puerto Ayora, is about as bustling as the Galápagos gets. Fishing boats bob in the harbor while sea lions nap on the docks without a care in the world. Little restaurants spill onto the streets, and every evening the famous fish kiosks come alive, grilling up freshly caught seafood that's about as fresh as it gets.

Truly, we still think about those dinners.

But it only takes a short drive inland before everything changes.

The dry coastal landscape gives way to lush green highlands, where giant Galápagos tortoises roam freely across ranches exactly as they have for generations. Seeing one of these incredible animals slowly ambling across a grassy field, completely unbothered by your presence is one of those travel moments that's impossible to forget.

Then there are the beaches, the snorkeling, the hidden coves.

You can spend the morning swimming at Las Grietas, a narrow volcanic crevice filled with unbelievably clear water, walk to Tortuga Bay to watch marine iguanas sunbathe on the beach, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about the islands' unique conservation efforts, and still have time to grab a fresh ceviche before sunset.

The wildlife here doesn't feel like something you've come to see, it feels like you've stepped into their world.

Which is exactly what makes the Galápagos so magical.

Whether Santa Cruz is your only Galápagos stop or the first island on a longer adventure, we've put together everything you need to know, from where to stay and what to do to the best wildlife experiences, beaches, and practical tips for making the most of your visit.

Here's our complete guide to Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos.

Until next time!
