The Ultimate Car Camping Checklist: For Practical yet bougie camping trips

Hello Reader,

Picture this: You’re sitting around a crackling campfire beneath a sky packed with stars. The air smells like pine trees and wood smoke. Dinner is cooking. Your campsite is perfectly organized. Life is good.

And then you realize you forgot the can opener.
Or your headlamp.
Or the coffee.

God help you if it’s the coffee.

S’mores around a crackling fire as stars twinkle overhead. Waking up at dawn to sip hot coffee and watch the sun rise.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned after years of camping, road trips, national park adventures, and generally finding creative ways to spend time outdoors, it’s this:

Nature always wins.

You can meticulously plan every detail of your trip, reserve the perfect campsite, pack your cutest flannel, and spend three weeks researching campfire recipes. And then you’ll discover you forgot something incredibly important.

It is usually something obvious. Like plates, or matches, or a pillow. Ask us how we know.

The good news is that camping gets a LOT more enjoyable once you have a reliable packing system. Which is exactly what we have with our ultimate car camping checklist.

It’s packed with all the gear we actually use ourselves, from the big obvious essentials down to the little things that make a surprisingly huge difference once you’re at camp.

We’re talking about things like:

  • A comfortable sleeping pad that doesn’t leave you feeling like you spent the night sleeping directly on geology.
  • A reliable headlamp for those inevitable middle-of-the-night bathroom adventures.
  • All the things you need to start a quick fire for those mornings when campfire coffee feels like a non-negotiable life requirement.
  • Collapsible water containers, bear canisters, camp chairs, first aid supplies, camp kitchen gear, and all the random little items you don’t realize you need until you’re standing in a campground store paying $14 for a plastic spatula.

We’ve also included some of our favorite camping upgrades. This is gear that isn’t technically necessary but dramatically improves campsite happiness.

Things like cozy camping blankets, portable lanterns, campsite lighting, and the gear that helps take a campsite from “temporary outdoor survival situation” into “surprisingly delightful outdoor living room.”

And with these tips, some of our favorite travel memories have happened while camping.

Watching the sunrise with a mug of coffee in hand. Making s’mores around a campfire. Listening to distant owl calls after dark.
And yes, occasionally chasing raccoons away from our food supply like we’re starring in an extremely low-budget nature documentary.

Whether you’re heading out on your very first camping trip or you’re a seasoned camper looking to refine your packing list, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s everything we pack for a successful camping trip — plus a printable packing list to make sure you don't forget a thing.

Happy camping!
